PlayLingo

Region restrictions and VPN

What “VPN required” means in PlayLingo, why translations or videos may not work in some regions, and how a VPN or signing in to YouTube helps.

Some services PlayLingo relies on — YouTube and the translation and explanation service — may be unavailable in certain regions. When that happens, a VPN usually fixes it.

“VPN required”

You’ll see “VPN required — Some services are unavailable in your region — turn on a VPN.” At the same time, PlayLingo turns off translation and pronunciation above words in the player, because they can’t load.

  1. Turn on a VPN on your device.
  2. Close the video and open it again.
  3. Turn Translation back on in the player if it stays hidden.

How to fix videos that don’t play

  1. Turn on a VPN.
  2. If videos still don’t play, switch your VPN server to the USA.
  3. Sign in to YouTube: Settings → App → Sign in to YouTube. Signing in often helps when videos won’t play.

If a specific video shows an error, see Video won’t open.

What works without a VPN

Your saved words, vocabulary practice and your progress are stored in your account and on the device — they don’t depend on YouTube.

Still not working

  • Try another VPN server or provider.
  • Update PlayLingo to the latest version.
  • Write to info@playlingo.app with your country and the video link.

Common questions

Which VPN country should I choose?

We recommend a server in the USA.

Do I need to keep the VPN on all the time?

Only while watching videos or using translations and explanations, if they don’t work without it.

I have a VPN on and still see “VPN required”.

Switch your VPN server to the USA, then close the video and open it again.
