FAQ

Questions, answered.

Is PlayLingo really free?+

Yes — the core experience is free forever. Pro unlocks unlimited AI buddy conversations and all 30+ languages.

What devices does it run on?+

iPhone (iOS 18+), iPad (iPadOS 18+), Mac with Apple Silicon (macOS 15+).

What languages are supported?+

30+ including Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Arabic, Turkish, Ukrainian and many more.

Can I use my own videos?+

Any YouTube video, podcast, or video with subtitles works. PlayLingo generates them when needed.

Will the AI buddy speak my language?+

Lingo replies in the language you set as your native one — and explains the language you're learning in context.

Is there a free trial for Pro?+

Yes — 7 days, no credit card needed up front.

How does the AI buddy actually work?+

Lingo runs on a state-of-the-art large language model fine-tuned for language tutoring. When you tap a word or phrase, Lingo sees the full subtitle context, the speaker's tone, and the video topic — and gives you a contextual answer rather than a dictionary definition.

Can I learn multiple languages at the same time?+

Yes. You can switch the learning language anytime from settings. Your saved words and progress are tracked separately for each language, so nothing gets mixed up.

What if a video doesn't have subtitles?+

PlayLingo generates accurate subtitles automatically using AI transcription. So even random YouTube videos without official captions work — you'll still get bilingual subtitles and tap-to-explain.

How is PlayLingo different from Language Reactor?+

Language Reactor is a Chrome extension for desktop. PlayLingo is a native iPhone, iPad and Mac app — built around a deeper AI tutor ("Lingo"), faster on mobile, and works with any video player without browser tricks.

Is my data private?+

Yes. We only collect minimal anonymous usage data to improve the app. No personal info is sold or shared. Full details in our Privacy Policy.

What proficiency levels does PlayLingo cover?+

From beginner (CEFR A1) to advanced (C1). Each saved word is tagged with a difficulty level so you can pick videos that match where you are — or push slightly above to grow.
