Video won’t open

What to do when a YouTube video won’t open in PlayLingo — “Video Unavailable”, “No Subtitles”, “Sign In Required” and region restrictions.

Checked September 15, 2026

Most videos open right away. When one doesn’t, the message on the screen tells you why. Find it below.

“Video Unavailable”

The video may have been deleted or made private, the link may be broken, or the author doesn’t allow playback outside YouTube.

  • Check that the video opens in the YouTube app.
  • Copy the link again from Share in YouTube.
  • If it plays on YouTube but not in PlayLingo, the author has disabled embedding — pick another video.

“No Subtitles” or “This video doesn’t have subtitles”

PlayLingo needs subtitles to build lessons. This video has none on YouTube — neither from the author nor automatic ones — so it can’t be opened for learning. Choose another video; most popular videos have automatic subtitles.

“Sign In Required”

YouTube requires you to be signed in to watch this video (for example, age-restricted videos).

  • Tap Sign In, or go to Settings → App → Sign in to YouTube.
  • Signing in to YouTube can also help when videos don’t play for other reasons.

“This video can only be watched on YouTube”

The author allows playback only on youtube.com. It can’t be played inside other apps.

“Subtitles unavailable” or “Can’t prepare subtitles”

  • Try another subtitle track under Subtitles before tapping Watch.
  • If you see “Subtitles are gone — open the video again”, close the video and open it once more.

Region restrictions: “VPN required”

Some services may be unavailable in your region. If you see “VPN required”, turn on a VPN. If videos still don’t play, try switching your VPN server to the USA.

No internet

“No connection — Check your internet connection and try again.” PlayLingo streams videos, so it needs a connection. Check Wi-Fi or mobile data and tap Try Again.

Still not working

  1. Update PlayLingo to the latest version in the App Store.
  2. Clear cached data: Settings → App → Storage → Clear All. It will download again when needed.
  3. Write to us at info@playlingo.app with the video link, or use Settings → Found a bug? — your app version is attached automatically.

Common questions

Why do some videos work on YouTube but not in PlayLingo?

Authors can forbid playback outside YouTube, and some videos have no subtitles. Both are YouTube settings we can’t change.

Can I download videos to watch offline?

No, videos play from YouTube and need a connection.
