Word explanations

A dictionary gives you every meaning of a word. Lingo, the AI buddy in PlayLingo, tells you what it means here — in this line, said by this person, in this video.

Explain a word

1. While a video plays, tap a word in the subtitles.
2. The explanation panel opens: the meaning in context, in your native language.
3. From the panel you can:
   • Speak — hear the word;
   • Copy;
   • Dictionary — open the system dictionary;
   • Tell me more — open a deep dive (Pro);
   • Save — add it to your vocabulary. You’ll see “Added to Vocabulary”.

Explain a phrase

Idioms and set phrases make sense only together. Press and hold a word, then slide your finger across the rest of the phrase. Lingo explains the whole selection.

Save a whole sentence

Tap the save icon under the line (Save sentence). Sentences come back in practice with the video clip. See How practice works.

Tap to explain or tap to play

In the player settings, Tap Action can be Explain (default) or Play from Word, which starts the video from the tapped word. With Play from Word, press and hold a word to get its meaning.

Deep dive (Pro)

Tell me more opens the full story of a word: overview, word forms, grammar, breakdown, how common it is, examples in action, background and related words.

Free or Pro

• Explanations are free while you have energy left for the day. See Free and Pro.
• With Pro, explanations are unlimited and deep dives are available.
• There is also a daily limit on the server for translations and explanations. If you reach it, you’ll see “Daily limit reached”, and they work again the next day.

Improve an explanation

If an explanation is unclear or wrong, tap Improve this explanation in the panel and tell us what’s off. It helps us make Lingo better.

Common questions

Which language does Lingo explain in?

In your native language by default. You can change it in Settings → App → AI Language.

Why is the explanation different from the dictionary?

Lingo looks at the whole line and the video, so it picks the meaning that fits this context instead of listing all of them.

Words I saved are highlighted in subtitles — can I turn that off?

Yes, in the player Highlighting settings: “Words from your vocabulary” and “Phrases from your vocabulary”.
