Understand mode
Understand mode hides the translation and pauses after each line, so you work out the meaning yourself and check with Show Translation.
In Understand mode you see the line but not its translation. You read, work out the meaning yourself, and reveal the translation only to check. This teaches you to understand straight away, without translating in your head.
How to use Understand mode
- In the player, tap the round mode button and choose Understand (or pick it from the mode row on the video page).
- The video plays one line and pauses.
- Read the line and try to understand it.
- Tap Show Translation to check yourself.
- Press play to continue to the next line.
What you see
- The line in the language you learn, fully visible.
- The translation hidden until you tap Show Translation.
- Word explanations work as usual — tap a word you don’t know. See Word explanations.
In this mode the translation layer is always on, so its toggle in the mode sheet is locked.
When to use it
In the app’s words: turn it on when you get most of it and only need the translation now and then.
Related settings
- Auto-pause turns on when you enter Understand, so the video waits after each line. To turn it off, tap the auto-pause button under the line (or press A). Your choice is remembered for this mode.
- Use repeat (R), Loop or Slow mode for a line you didn’t catch. See Playback controls.
- Tap a line in the list to jump to it.
Free or Pro
Understand mode is free. Watching time uses your free daily energy, as in any mode. See Free and Pro.
Common questions
Why can’t I turn the translation off in the mode sheet?
The translation is the thing Understand hides and reveals, so the layer stays on. Switch to Watch or Listen if you want different behaviour.
How do I stop the video pausing after every line?
Tap the auto-pause button under the line. Understand will remember that choice next time.
What’s the difference from Listen mode?
Understand hides only the translation — you still read the line. Listen hides the text too. See Listen mode.
